Weeping Willa

This is the post that I referenced in the comments concerning the likeness to Scarlett O'Hara here. When I started this post, it was with a phrase as the title from Dead to the World. It lead me on an interesting little tour. Now, the requisite quote - where "Weeping Willa" appears is here:

I sighed, and my eyes watered, as they so often did

See I find that really interesting, given I have a five yr old who holds onto *everything* and is still upset, over two months later, that due to a mix-up, I gave the picture we'd taken for her aunt to admire, to said aunt and she will (cue dramatic wail) "Never get it back, EVER!"

She's an Eeyore, not a Pollyanna.

But it would be too much to expect Sookie, who's 'heard' things in people's head and been subjected to abuse and disdain and even the scepticism of her mother, to be a Pollyanna. She is better putting it aside. And dwelling on it would be sooo boring for us to read.

Oh poor little thing. I always make my kids breathe and let it go. But then I had a son who worried about everything - including Aztec sacrifice, and whether they were going to re-institute it. Since crops are doing well, I'd say not. He inherits that worry thing from me though - I worked myself up to ulcers and panic attacks. So I learned long ago to put stuff aside.

I think it would just be something that you'd need to think "Yeah, that's bad" and move on. You can't change it. And it would be just boorish to read.

Yeah, I need to think of a way to get her to do that. But she's so stubborn she gets stuck on stuff, and it's difficult. The latest thing is dying - she doesn't want to and she wants me to guarantee that I won't let her die and she'll live forever. Um...that's a bit beyond me. Between that and her interest in vampires I think she's going to be an interesting teenager :)

Ulcers and panic attacks sound awful though. You would have to let go when it starts affecting your health like that.

My husband and myself and both the kids are stubborn. So you just have to get them to let stuff go - I usually talk to them in my calm voice, hold their hands, look them in the eyes, and get them to breathe. And put all their frustrations into the breathing, and just breathe it out. And I make sure that their shoulders are relaxed before I stop.

Lol at the teenager thing - yeah, she'll be into vampires for sure.

Oh it was terrible - 16 and you feel like you're having a heart attack? Ugh. So I let things go nowadays.

You really are making total sense, I have had a harder life. People ask me how I stay so strong. I look at them and say what else am I supposed to do? I am not going to roll over and die because I have had crap thrown my way. I would rather be in a boat then shinking or swimming. I needed a reminder about this subject today! Plus I love Gone With The Wind.

It's a pretty common tactic that lots of people use - when you group the misfortune together, it sounds like a lot. And yeah - there's nothing to be done other than lay down and die. Which is why Henry Rollins is such a good role model for *not* doing that.

Yay! :D

Sookie's inner strength has always been one of the things that has drawn me into her characater. I can't imagine how awful it would be to hear what everyone is thinking. It's amazing she still sane.

TB Sookie cries because it looks dramatic and supposedly makes good tv. It's much harder to show someone holding it all together and breaking down in the quiet moment when she's all alone...after all there would be no one there to react to all those copious amounts of tears. Man...that would actually require the use of a good writer and a good actor/actress....hmmmm....maybe that's more of the problem!

I think the sanity is a rare thing - made possible only by a certain set of circumstances. And she's only made relatively healthy and strong (not a shambles like Barry) because of the way Gran dealt with it. If her mother lived, Sookie would be a wreck.

Lol - indeed. I've seen women crying alone, breaking down for a quiet moment on television, written well. This is not True Blood's forte unfortunately, and one must have a screaming cry with other people looking at you like you're an insect (cue Season 3 Eric to show us how bad it all was). Anna Paquin doesn't really grab me in any of her roles since X-Men - and I think she benefits from a better director telling her what to do. I think the combo of bad writing and crappy direction make her skills worse.

We have a saying in our house, which we got from a bumper sticker: “Bark less, wag more.” The Canine Method? Not quite the same as the Scarlett O’Hara technique, but it makes everyone giggle ( ... )

;) It's a good one. My kids are on to me, so I have to be sneaky about the psychologizing.
