Comfort Food

Lately I've been thinking about how things work out in fiction, as opposed to how fanfic often works them out. Most of the time, fanfic is forced (or readers want it to be forced) to be the most conventional story that ever existed. I was discussing that with a few friends by PM - the need to have a fanfic wherein the good get rewarded, the bad get ( Read more... )

you know shit about sookie, ch & svm is not so amateur, rants of the fanficy flavour, eric northman the lover, 1 gassed coal mine canary♫, my little thought dalliances, sookie stackhouse - 28, rage against the machine, you think you can write

Yay - our very own version of the Bullshit Bingo (as we call it here). :-D

Porn is porn and BDB is just that. But that`s not what I dislike about them. It`s the whole "he smelled her and knew he had to have her".
Whatever happened to liking someone for who she is? To seeing if you have some common ground, common interests? To getting to know someone.
But I suppose it`s just that I`m jealous because I`ve been wearing the wrong deodorant all my life. Noone ever sniffed me and growled "MINE", dammit. :-P
Oh, and the books are incredibly repetitive too. Very annoying.

Well, what's the point in giving her a personality if she's going to spend her life on her back. Perhaps it would be better to give her a trolley at groin height so he can run errands, and she can leave the house.

You know, if some stranger sniffed me and growled Mine, that would probably be the last guy on Earth I would sleep with. Even good looking men can be batshit crazy.

Lately I`ve done some extended research (all in the name of science, mind you) and I think I can say that it`s what Amazon terms "Erotica" and not "Romance" that is the reason for these stories ( ... )

Oh see, I'd much rather read something without a complex architecture of how they have to stay together forever. I think it's just a salve to morality, and prudish morality at that. It's perfectly okay for a woman to have random sex with a random stranger if he's not sullying her for her future husband. Which sucks arse.

BDSM sells well - ebook purveyors can sell endless stuff on it. It's usually because it's close enough to the old rape romances that it still appeals, because BDSM is often misrepresented.

Lol - I'd just say you were making excuses for yourself. :D

I love the bingo card and it would work SO well with so many of the stories around, sadly. It might even make me want to read them as opposed to skim the odd bits and read the reviews instead.

And from Thyra's description of the BDB it sounds as though that's bled into TB, because that's exactly what I hate now about the Bill/Sookie/Eric stuff in the show - it's all about mystical blood connections and nothing about actually liking a person.

And now I have to go and write something, or we will NEVER get to the bit where Sookie and Eric give their third grandchild an electric unicorn for her birthday :)

Oh yes - I definitely read lotsa fanfic - I know my memes. It's interesting that barely any of them are from the books. Thank goodness, because they suck.

It's apparently the new vogue to make women back into masturbatory holes for men, and women to stupidly cheer it on. Short cut all that stuff about having a personality and make it all about the taste of your vaginal juices.

Dude - yours is the one story wherein I actually want to know! I thought about putting that disclaimer up there, but I figured I wouldn't sully your fic being associated with the bad SVM fanfic. :D

And mine is possibly the one story where you may actually get there, in almost real time, rather than in a run-down of their last 60 years in the last half of the last chapter :)

Yeah, there seems to be a lot of stuff where it's just sex from start to finish. The important bit is that Eric talks dirty to her, which is probably the equivalent of 'You smell nice, you're mine' from a vampire.

Yes, but I'll love it all the way and actually be interested. In fact, I'm curious about it. :D But then, I know you're not going to make Kiwi Sookie immortal. You've got babies covered. :D

Oh Eric never fucking shuts up. He lectures her right the way through the sex now as well. Real Eric-like - he's such a talker...oh, no, wait - that was BILL with the dirty talk. Nevermind.

LOVE the fanfic Bingo :oD

And LOVE LOVE LOVE that there are two links to my stories *blush*bounce*squee*

Thanks :oD

Now I just need to find it in me to write more things that also don't suck.

I'm still raving about Crazy - and I still think about it every so often. :D So thank *you*. :D

Will puppy dog eyes at the screen work for you? I do them lots. :D

You can make puppy dog eyes... they might not help with the writer's block, but they'll certainly entertain me. Anything puppy or dog related is high on my list of adorableness.

Part of the thanks for Crazy needs to go to my friend who's a psychiatric nurse... it was he who first came up with the suggestion of "what if..."

The one piece I really REALLY want to finish, but just don't seem to be able to piece the words together for, is Stranger than FanFiction... maybe I need to re-watch Harold Crick for some inspiration. Nothing makes my heart melt more than that flour scene.

I do them at least twice a week. Today is a good day - Ooshka updated, so there'll be no need for the eyes.

Well he's brilliant.

Yes! Rewatch it! I love the flour scene - it makes me want to bake and is definitely heart-melty. :D

I had to check that I wasn't reading REALLY bad fanfiction

Well on the upside... at least there's hope for the rest of us ;o)

So I've heard. I thank goodness for my slackness, and Thyra going before me - otherwise I would have pitched money into the coffers based on recommendations. Now if someone recommends BDB as "good reading" I know that person is probably a horny idiot.

And with fanfic, I can have all the derivative juices I can stomach. Blergh.

I was just thinking all of this! But less coherently, of course. I have stopped perusing the fanfic updates, because even just the names of some of them repulse me so much that seeing them puts me off reading any other fanfic, even fanfic I like. I can't even read them for the giggles anymore. SVM fanfic has become SVM fanfic fanfic - just the most popular stories being re-written, but treated as BRAND NEW, TOTALLY ORIGINAL IDEAS.

Ugh.

To be fair - it is virtually impossible to come up with new plotlines or new ways for Eric and Sookie to get together when there`s already over 3000 stories on the SVM-fanfiction only. I know I`m scratching my head for original ideas and probably rarely succeeding. Of course, now I can just use PMR`s SVM-bingo and get on with it :-D ( ... )

Oh I totally agree it is very difficult to come up with new plotlines. I don't even mind reading a different version of a plot I've read before, if it's a good story, and the characters don't piss me off. What I get sick of is the A/N's at the beginning saying 'OMG, just had this *amazing* new idea for how Eric and Sookie could meet, and now I just *have* to write it. Sorry about the 900 other, also very original fanfics I've left unfinished to concentrate on this new one'. And then the reviews saying 'I've never read anything like this before!!!11@#$'

Lol, actually, I don't think I've come across Sookie the ghost. I would love to read about Eric's frustration at discovering that his gracious plenty goes right through her :D

You know his gracious plenty would bring her back to life. All he'd have to do is wave it in her general direction and she'd be back with him forever. :)
