Them Crazy Shippers

Sep 07, 2011 05:25

I was discussing this subject with someone - about the fact that there are a whole bunch of crazy "shippers" - which is short for those who yearn for a certain relationship between characters - in this fandom. Shippers are easy to write for, because basically, you could write the worst of tales, and shippers would cheer it on as long as the couple ( Read more... )

Oh, I do so hate the whole put them into therapy trope. Or the reviews that exhort them to go into therapy. Maybe it's because I come from this end of the planet where we don't talk about stuff, we just, you know, hang out on our farms and get all broody and stoic, but it seems a weird kind of fix for every single problem to me. Sure it's probably great for specific issues (which hopefully is how I used it) but I can't see it as being a basis for a relationship. Yay! The therapist fixed us and now we can be together forever! It's no different really to all the vamp fics where there's a prophecy and they *have* to be together because it's fated. Poor Sookie being stuck with a large, annoying vampire who likes to boss her around and kill people for eternity ( ... )

As soon as they go to therapy and fix their problems in an instant, I lose interest. I'm not going to cheer someone on who's too damn lazy to write the actual story ( ... )

I just struggle with the whole idea of therapy being the catch-all fix to a relationship. It's like the stories which have those big time-jumps during which everyone miraculously decides that actually, it might be nice to be together forever, or have copious amounts of sex, well...same diff. I can never quite figure out how the passage of time fixes the problems that were there in the first place, other than that usually Eric and Sookie have managed to lose whatever pretend-significant other they had trailing around with them before. Oh, and Sookie decided she was wrong. But she's so sloooow in figuring that out. Maybe that's the advantage of the therapy? It doesn't take her two years of contemplation to figure it out because someone just tells her. Problem solved ( ... )

Sookie often figures out that she's wrong. If she breaks up with Eric, there's no one around to tell her, so it takes her a while. :D

OMG - you might have predictive qualities there. I'll wait for it to appear. All it needs is Askars lying back on a couch, and we'll have that.

Surprise babies aren't good for relationships - I know from experience. But we at least had a good foundation. I'd decided to be with him before I'd found out I was pregnant. It's not like fanfic surprise babies, that against all logic fix relationships that are complete failures.

Lol - that sounds like a special kind of hell. I'm so glad I had boys. Shrek and Thomas the Tank Engine wasn't nearly as grating. Lol at the TB writing team. They'd probably use it, if they could cast Bill as Barbie.

And you're welcome. :D :D
