Progressive, yes?

I dropped in today on a movie review on the latest Harry Potter - which was released today around the world. Before I was obsessed about SVM, I used to be obsessed about HP. Unfortunately, contrary to JKR's assertions that you could figure out the ending from the books that preceded it, I did not consider she would introduce a whole new mythology ( Read more... )

you know shit about sookie, travails of the svm fandom, the art of arse backwards, the psychology of violence, so many dead and gone, vamps=dangerous liaisons, eric northman the lover, love isn't brains it's blood, happily ever afters 'n' such, i thinked about svm today, sookie stackhouse - 28

I agree - the tough decisions are what makes it. I suppose you could have the character just winning all the time, but then you trade off other things. Dumbledore's death couldn't have been worked out any other way.

Indeed, being the other half to a killing machine - one as ruthless and hard as Eric - well, you wouldn't *be* the other half if you just lived in fluff town. You'd be the casual screw who sees him once a month when he's sloughed off the latest round of blood.

Lily had a HEA at the end of her books. It wasn't made explicitly clear that everything was tied up in a bow, but she was doing okay, and a lot happier at the end than she was at the start. I found it very satisfying - just like we'd dipped into her life, we dipped out again.

I agree. To a certain extent, if you weren't an optimist, then you probably wouldn't survive.

I don't have a need for a HEA - just I want one for most of CH's characters because I love them and want them to be happy. Like Vimes in Terry Pratchett's books - I want him to be happy. Some of my favourite books have no HEA. Or one like a James Herbert book that ended up with the entire population of the earth being blinded for life ( ... )

Hi PMR, I was wondering if you've read the Fever Series? I really really enjoyed the series. And I loved the way Mac had grown up in the books. btw I love Barron.

As for Harry Potter, I didn't read the reviews, my son did and told me. I thought he was joking. I really don't know what they were thinking but Harry and friends grew up. What did they expect to happen.

I haven't. I tend to limit my reading nowadays - fanfic gets a pass because it's online and I can research in one tab, and read fanfic in another.

It's insane. There seems to be a general theme of confusion that Harry will have tough stuff going on. I mean, the stories *start* with a grown adult trying to kill a baby - this is not fluffy stuff.

Sounds like a Disney story. Ever noticed that in "Disney" stories one parent or both in some cases, are killed off. Or they just aren't there. Disney isn't fluffy stuff either. Bambi, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Rescuers Down Under. Just to name a few. Either the father or mother isn't there.

If you do ever get the time. The Fever series is really really good. I'll be reading them over again. I'd really love to know what your thoughts on those books would be.

Oh, they have parents dying, but not trying to kill kids.

I'll put it at the end of the list. Maybe when I finish my thesis I'll have time. :)

i much prefer the progression of a character to a "reset" back to light and fun. the point of getting lost in a series is being invested in the character, and why would one do that if there was no development?

I agree - and I would wonder how you would invest in the character in that scenario. I don't think you'd be able to if you couldn't see the journey they've come through. When I opened DR, I was already invested in Sookie - but I wouldn't be so concerned with her happiness if the torture was just a thing that happened and didn't have effect.
