Well, I haven't had a close look outside the walls of this journal, but I have seen some of the new post Dead Reckoning fics and their reviews. Yet again !surprise! there's dissatisfaction with the book. I'm not sure when some of these readers will get that they're urban fantasy, and will not follow the lines of your usual trashy romance novel ( Read more... )

the art of arse backwards, so many dead and gone, ch & svm is not so amateur, vampire politics = drama, mine.mine.mine.mine.mine, all rhodes lead to atd, vamps=dangerous liaisons, always vampires first, eric northman the lover, sparse truth & rarish lies, let's talk dead reckoning, i thinked about svm today, sookie stackhouse - 28, going from dead to worse, andre's beloved blood bond

I agree-I think there was a ton of growth for Sookie in DR. It’s interesting, because I can’t remember in any of the other books her beating herself up as much as she did in DR (do you?), but at the same time, I thought she came to some firm resolutions, esp. w/ Eric (and yes, w/ Claude & Amelia too). It takes a strong character to both recognize her own mistakes *and* still expect to be treated w/ respect & have her own needs met. Eric will always be Eric, and only a strong character would be able to be in any kind of meaningful relationship with him. They still have obstacles (and always will), but I think they’re in a better spot now that it seems Sookie is ready to hold firm.

Great quote. I’d call it romantic too. ;)

I think DAG was full of realisation and recovery. Sookie is really coming into herself, but I thought it reflected the character growth in DAAD as well. I really started loving Sookie after that book, because she'd stopped deferring to Bill and questioned stuff. I liked her far better as a person. But DR has her questioning herself and finally having some boundaries.

I agree about the strong character being one that can recognise mistakes, and still want respect. It seems fundamental to me that Sookie has a great deal of pride - that often drives her to keep on going and buck herself up - that translates to having pride around Eric and not just kowtowing.

I think personally, that I would stake Eric in his sleep. :D

I know! I thought it was very profound, so I had to share it.

Yes, there has been a long progression. (Whew!)

She *does* have a lot of pride. She typically goes ballistic when she thinks she is being dishonored, which is why I thought it was so remarkable that she was able to think clearly enough to lead the Victor Murder Committee after discovering Eric's betrothal to OK. Oh, and after being chased through the woods and ending up in Bill's resting place. I can't decide whether she pulled all of that off because of or in spite of her pride. Or both. ;)

You'd stake him? Well, you’re gutsier than I am. I’d run the other way. ;) JanineMNM

It has been and she's doing so well.

I hate that the primary place she loses her pride is in fanfic. That's one of the things sucked right out of her in a lot of stories. She's not proud any more - she just begs at Eric's feet. Which is disgusting.

Sookie is absolutely remarkable in her resilience - I think it's one of the things I like best about her. She'd make an excellent vampire. I think the get-up-and-go factor is due to her Gran and her telepathy. Sookie hasn't had the privilege of being away from nasty things to lick her wounds, and so she can take that sort of blow to her pride.

If you run away, he'd catch you if he wants you around. I think I'd kill him just about after the surprise marriage. He probably wouldn't want me around because I'd frown at him all the time. :D

Excellent post.

I think that the fact that Sookie is strong and always stands behind her beliefs, even when they are the exact opposite of Eric's is one of the main reasons Eric loves her. He is a strong character and he needs and respects a woman that is as strong as he is. That's why they can have a true partnership and a marriage, because there is a equality there. In most romance novels that's not really true, the man is usually an alpha ans the woman always needs rescuing. I like Sookie and Eric's relationship a lot better.

Thanks. :D

I think it is too - he hasn't exactly thrown her over for the entire bar full of groupies who'll tell him what he wants to hear. It's not as if that's not an option for him. Bill too is turned off by Judith's will to please him, and instead wants Sookie who challenges him at every turn.

Being a high handed manipulator as well, I love my husband not because he does as he's told, but because as infuriating as it can be, he's stubborn and has his own thoughts. It's just no fun to have your beliefs parroted back unless you're narcissistic.

The romance formula is relatively simple - the woman gives up her body, and the man makes up the rest of her personality. The bits that don't involve boning. If she has them at all. They play on the lust centres of the brain - the man is a show off, and the woman is altruistic in her personality.
