I once had a cat who started losing weight really fast. He was only a few months old. It turned out that he had a sore in his mouth, and it was too painful for him to eat. It wasn’t cancer, the vet checked for that.

Once the sore was lanced, I just had to give the cat antibiotics and feed him canned food. I’d been trying to feed the poor little guy dry food, and he couldn’t eat that with his painful mouth. Once I gave him canned food, he just inhaled the stuff. His weight was back to normal very quickly.
