Lordy, lordy, the Oscars. I watched them because Mom watched them, but I'll admit I enjoyed them, to an extent. In fact, I had a funny entry all written out about them, but then Mom fell yesterday and cracked her head open, so I spent the whole evening with her at the emergency room while she got seven stitches. She's fine now though, folks! ( Read more... )

I am almost sorry I missed the Oscars, but somehow, I think your post was more interesting than watching three hours of back-slapping and glad-handing.

It really was pretty boring, for the most part. And I felt so sorry for Lauren Bacall during the film noir tribute, when she had her senior moment and couldn't read the cue cards. :-( To hell with all of those people tittering in the Kodak Theater. She's Baby, dammit, and what Baby wants, Baby gets.

:( People tittered at Lauren Bacall? That is not right, Maura.

To be fair, it was less tittering and more whispering pityingly behind hands. Still not right, though. :-

Keira Knightley annoys me so much. I can't stand her. I think she is the most annoying person on earth. Though she is hot. But I did not like her dress for some reason. I thought Michelle Williams' was really pretty and so was Reese Witherspoon's, but RW's speech made me want to vomit. She is like her character in Election always - a really perky, annoying girl that is good at everything - also her 'I'm just trying to make work that matters' or whatever it was statement.. yeah, like Legally Blonde 1 and 2.

Also, I love Will Smith beyond all reason. Also I was REALLY glad that Tsotsi won best foreign film, and that the guy said 'Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika!' - that gave me a little thrill. I wanted either it or Paradise Now to win.

I agree about Crash, I didn't think it was that good of a film for what it was. Somehow it could've been better. But I think it was clever in that it did at least show that everyone is racist in some way. It wasn't anywhere as good as Brokeback Mountain, though. I think I want to marry Jake Gyllenhaal :(

Keira Knightly isn't all that great an actress, but holy fuck, that bone structure. I wonder what it's like to be really beautiful? How weird must it be to get up in the morning, brush your teeth, and look at this gorgeous person in the mirror? I mean, do you think it would still please you, or would it get old after awhile? And I'd think it'd be like being rich; you'd always wonder if someone who made a pass at you actually cared at all about you, or if they were just responding to the way that chance arranged your genes. It'd be weird, I bet.

Crash did show that everyone is racist in some way. Again, and again, and again, thuddingly, like being beaten with a rubber mallet for two and a half hours. Then again, subtlety has never been Paul Haggis' strong suit.

I want to marry Maggie Gyllenhaal. We can have a double wedding!

George Clooney is Matt Helm without the aura of skank.

I fell asleep during the whole last half of the Oscars. I had to get Mom to fill me in, and she's biased. She adores George Clooney, of course (all old ladies do) and she kept rattling on at me about how Heath Ledger looks like my nephew. I finally had to download Brokeback Mountain to shut her up.
