I haven't seen Farenheit 911 in its entirety yet, but I've read a transcript and seen several lengthy clips from it. What bothers me the most about it is that Michael Moore obviously intends that the viewer should leave the theater hating George Bush. Not that this is in and of itself a bad aim; Dubya is pretty hate-worthy, for a great many ( Read more... )

You know, I hadn't thought of that, but you're right; After the past couple years of Ashcroftian repression, it is refreshing to finally hear someone stand up and yell that not only does the emperor have no clothes, but that he's a goddamned idiot. I really do worry, though, because based on what I see on my friends-of-friends, there are quite a few people out there (to be fair, these mostly seem to be people whose adult awareness doesn't stretch back any farther than this president's administration) who think that unseating George W. will automatically solve everything that's wrong with the world, end unemployment, lower the deficit, bring peace to the West Bank, cause the rivers to run chocolate and the skies to rain skittles and then we'll all go dancing off to the Magic Mountain together. If only, and as though the other one isn't just as much of a lying fuckwad.

William Castle -- that's a brilliant comparison. *snerk* Now I wanna go wire theater seats to TICK LOUDLY during that whole seven-minute segment.

Wouldn't it be nice if life were really like Skittles commercials? :(

Wouldn't a rain of Skittles be kind of like dropping $25.00 in pennies off the Empire State Building?

I don't object to propaganda from the left when it's obvious that it is, indeed, propaganda: sometimes it's good for morale to indulge in a jeer without hedging and qualifying. The idea of liberal talk radio doesn't appal me just because it's talk radio.

At worst, Fahrenheit 911 will simply keep people polarised. Moore is too heavy-handed to entice people to reconsider their views; hell, most British people seem to think Bowling For Columbine confirms their anti-gun beliefs even though it endorses Canada's culture of gun ownership. But if Fahrenheit 911 does nothing for critical thinking, it will be a spur to activists who are already active.

As for Darfur, 1) thank goodness Colin Powell is in government and 2) I suspect the ummah is like 'the American people' or the 'silent majority' - a rhetorical tool. But that's a great paragraph of yours.

There's this strange idea floating around the blogs that if we show Dubya the door in November, then the rest of the world will stop hating us. Unfortunately the world's just gotten a taste of America hating. This triggers my Otto response bigtime. :)
