"Donny… come inside. It’s freezing out here," Alan said gently.

Don had been out for hours, staring into the koi pond, his breath puffing in front of him. The temperature had dropped hard and ice was starting to form on the edges of the pond. The koi looked confused.

It seemed like the best place to go after his mother’s funeral when he couldn’t stand the soft eyes and gentle sympathies any more. If it hadn’t been for the ice, he might not even have noticed the temperature change. His hands were cold, so were his feet, but that was nothing compared to how cold he felt inside.

"Don?" Alan repeated.

Slowly, Don stood and turned to his father, walking back toward the house. "We should bring the fish inside. Mom’ll be upset... we shouldn’t let them freeze."

Alan looked carefully at his son and nodded. "I’ll get the bucket."
