I'll have to take a look at Bill Bryson's Notes From a Small Island in the bookstore. his works are really popular! I got a copy of A Walk In The Woods, but neither of us has read it yet.
I highly recommend Cold Comfort Farm. it is hilarious and sweet. as is the 1995 adaptation. ^_^
Of Bill Bryson's books I would above all recommend Notesfrom a Big Country , as I believe the US title is. It's a collection of columns he wrote after re-patriating to the US after nearly two decades in the UK, and I find it hilarious. All his writing is supremely engaging, although I haven't read A Walk in the Woods, but I've thoroughly enjoyed everything else he's written. In a similar vein of hilarious travel literature, I would also recommend Douglas Adams' and Mark Carwardine's Last Chance to See as a wonderful read.
I loved the film adaptation of Cold Comfort Farm - I shall certainly add it to my summer reading list. Did you have Margaret Cezair-Thompson at Wellesley? Her latest book, The Pirate's Daughter was on Richard and Judy's Must-Read summer list here in the UK, I'll definitely be checking that out as well.
