Battlestar Galactica's 4.5.1 (no spoilers)

Jan 19, 2009 01:52

Well over 18 months ago, I said to several of my nearest and dearest (who took note of it at the time) that there was only one right way for the series to conclude, whether the Team Galactica writers got it right or not.

It appears that Team Galactica have got it right.

I wins the internets. And a cookie.

Congrats on calling whichever aspect of the show you called! (I guessed the 5th Cylon right, for what little that's worth. :) )

I'm confident now in the remaining episodes. I think the show's going to go out well.

Well, as I mentioned in the title, no spoilers. But I'll be evil enough to say that the fifth Cylon was never as important as I'm told millions of fans thought... :D

Ah, well. The original series - for which I shall always have a strange soft spot - was sheer panto, out and out sci-fi nonsense for kiddies of all ages. The new series is strictly for grown-ups. Ron Moore and company took the bare bones of the original, i.e. the basic concept and a number of primary and secondary character names, and treated it with the intelligence and no-holds-barred adult realism of, in SF literature terms, a Greg Egan at his very best. It's socially and politically relevant; it tackles hard issues with the moral greyness real life has; it's full of things that happen in the way things really do happen - sometimes for no apparent reason, sometimes confusingly, sometimes no-no-you-can't-do-that-in-fiction gut-punching grimness. And it amuses me that by virtue of it very adult-ness, it doesn't grab some members of a certain ~coughcoughlightsabresusedinforeplaycoughcough~ slice of the geek-nerd-otaku demographic :P :P :P
