Very, very nice!! I love this. I loved MoW (his and the Magus' chess match was my favorite scene), and Helen, but by far your most well done character is the Magus. He's in character, and you tell the story from his PoV very believably.
Your use of story telling to convey a message is also very well done. I enjoyed that it wasn't this-equals-that, but was still representative of the story - just like mwt.

Oh, snap, that was kind of totally awesome. And it was made multiple times better by the tone and language you're couching everything in. It matches canon perfectly and the magus even better, and there are so many things! gah! the chess game! the old woman! the story!

Ugh, every time I think about it it gets better. I can't wait for part two.
