What can I say?

Except that I've now been here for three weeks, and it already feels like home. Oxford is gorgeous. We live about a mile and a quarter from the City Centre, which is where Exeter College and most of my classes are. That means that, on the average, I've been spending at least an hour a day walking from place to place. There's an excellent bus ( Read more... )

You know, my expectations for Oxford are based entirely on Gaudy Night. And on Russell's experience there, I suppose, but I think those were heavily based on Gaudy Night. Is it anything like Gaudy Night?

It's quite different in some ways, obviously--even Oxford does change a bit with the times. We're no longer required to wear our gowns everywhere, for instance, except for certain official functions, formal dinners, and exams. All the colleges but one are now co-ed, and the remaining girls' college is in the process of changing over (if it hasn't already; I'm not quite up-to-date). The class divide, though it's still here, is far less evident. Curfews are practically nonexistent, as far as I know. There's the additional fact that Harriet is a senior member of college and spends most of her time in the SCR, and of course I'm on the other end of things, so it's bound to be different. wow! that sounds really exciting. a mile and a quarter is no walk in the park either (well, i suppose it could be, but that's not the point). good luck keeping up with it.

i'm confused. your tutor gives you assignments outside of class? that just sounds mean.

and wow the books! and the dumbwaiters! i've always wanted a house with one of those. can i read your mysteries when you write them?

best of luck with your classes and all

Hi Sara,

I have been watching to see if you post to your Live Journal in hopes that we get some information on what exciting travels you are having. Alas, not much has been posted. Perhaps now that I have joined the 21st century and have my own Live Journal thingy, perhaps we will hear more from you. Can we do like IM'ing on this? We need to connect at a cheap rate.

Love mommy
