“Oh no. I’m not going anywhere in that.”

Chloe looked from Dean to her sporty little Yaris and back. “What’s wrong with my car?”

Dean snorted. “I’m driving to this shindig.”

Chloe shook her head. “I don’t want to roll up to my class reunion in your pimp mobile.”

Dean shook his head. “Good thing she can’t hear you from here.”

Chloe crossed her arms and glared.

“Prom queen,” Dean reminded her.

“Okay, fine.” Chloe threw her hands up. “Bring your car around. I’ve got to get a couple of supplies from my trunk.”

“Supplies?” Dean gave her an incredulous look.

“We’re going back to Smallville,” she said. “Land of the weird. Home of the strange. It always pays to be prepared like a girl scout.”

“I think that’s the boy scouts.”

“I look awful in their uniforms.” Chloe said.

Dean backed the Impala around and then took careful notes as Chloe transferred the entire contents of her trunk into his baby. More than one item made him raise an eyebrow. “You need a bullet proof vest?”

“Bullets hurt,” Chloe said. “I think we’d better leave the flash grenade behind. It’s a little touchy.”

Once they were settled into the Impala, and underway, Chloe’s already tense posture seemed to go ramrod straight. Dean looked across at her in the passenger seat, and decided that he needed to get her mind off of tonight. “Did I mention that you look . . .” he groped for words. Good didn’t quite cover it. She’d worn a nice little black suit, and her hair was pulled up. She was definitely giving off naughty librarian vibes. Particularly when she looked at him with one eyebrow cocked impatiently like that. “ . . . Hot?”

“Thank you, Paris.” She rolled her eyes.

Dean sighed and gave up.

After a minute or two, Chloe cleared her throat. “You know, my dad has a thing for classic cars. I can’t really ride in a car like this with a big bench seat without thinking that my feet shouldn’t touch the floor.”

Dean grinned at that. “Does he have much of a collection?”

“Not right now.” Chloe shrugged. “We shared a Ford Falcon when I was in high school. But he has an overseas job. And storing cars is kind of expensive.”

Dean shook his head. “Nothing like a Chevy, but it’s still better than that piece of crap you drive.”

Chloe rolled her eyes and lapsed into silence. After a while, they pulled into the parking lot of Smallville High school.

“Hasn’t changed much,” Chloe said as she stared through the windshield at the high school. “Maybe later I’ll show you the newspaper offices.”

Dean took a fortifying breath. “So . . . we going to run into any old boyfriends?”

“Hope not,” Chloe shook her head. “Most of them tried to kill me.” Off Dean’s incredulous look, she shrugged to downplay the matter. “There are a couple of things you need to know: Clark and Lois from The Planet will both be there - we all went to high school here. I nursed a horrible crush on Clark for way too long. Lois is like a sister to me. And then there’s Lana. She was also a friend. She and Clark had this reoccurring off and on and off and on and why are they still doing this thing going on for . . . ever. And Lana will find some way to bring up old damage and make it all about her. And she’s married to Pete, who is usually resentful of Clark over something I forget about. Oh, and Lex may be there. He’s Lana’s ex husband; Clark’s ex friend, and possibly the Prince of Darkeness, although I can’t quite prove it.”

Dean blinked in astonishment. Chloe had vomited out that long statement without stopping to breathe. Now she sat there looking at him expectantly.

“You’ve got baggage.”

“You have no idea.”.
