I'm sure it's his mother. Lex's ex'es tend to develop a terminal case of dead. All except Lana. Her sparkly Mary Sue powers protected her from that.

Mary has probably had her hands full with Dean and Sam. Especially asfter Dean's last angel had a nervous breakdown getting him out of the hell contract. Although if Mary can squeeze out a few hours to watch Chance, she will.

And Pastor Jim is probably the reason John got the job in the first place. He's filing paperwork for St. Michael, when mike came in with his head in his hads muttering the name winchester and hellhounds, when Jim opened his mouth and suddenly John got the job.
