I absolutely adore
divas_lament's Librarian series. She's let me play in it a time or two when the inspiration struck.
So with her permission, just for her. The wacky adventures of Spencer and Chloe.
To say that nothing phased Spencer McAllister was an understatement. Oh sure, once upon a time he'd been poleaxed by plenty. But that was before going to work in the Library. Now - not being phased was almost a survival skill.
Just keep your head down. Do the job and go home.
It was the keeping your head down bit that was the tricky part. Largely because if you didn't, some enchanted thingamajigger was likely to come sailing by and take it off.
Just another day at the office.
When Spencer walked in that day, the reference librarian was circling wide around Chloe's office. The doors were shut, the lights were off and a series of ominous bangs and curses were coming from the room.
Knowing Chloe - it could be anything. From Leprechauns and Unicorns to ninjas after the Eye of Armageddon. And seriously, why was it always ninjas?
He shot the reference librarian an apologetic smile as he unlocked the door. Inside, Chloe's office was trashed - more so than usual. His boss stalked by like Elmer Fudd, hunting wabbits. She turned, and he could see that she'd grabbed the Spear of Lona from off it's shelf.
Spencer raised his eyebrow at that. “Problem, Chlo?”
“Sprinkler system malfunctioned,” Chloe said shortly. “Who knew they multiplied when you got them wet?”
“Uh huh.” He shut the door gently. It was really better not to know the whole story. The routine was morning paper, then coffee. And she'd probably want it extra strong after dealing with this.
* * *
Less than an hour later, Chloe stuck her head out of the office door. Spencer looked up from his own triple shot of espresso and the lifestyle section of the New York Times to stare at her. At some point, her hair had slipped out of it's messy ponytail, and hung in bedraggled tendrils around her sweaty face.
“I need some help getting them back into their box,” she said.
With a look heavenward and a long suffering sigh, Spencer got up and put the paper down.
“It's just a good thing there was no food lying around,” Chloe said. “If they eat after midnight, the indigestion makes them really mean.”
As he followed his boss back into the office, Spencer grumbled under his breath. “ "I could have been a cashier in the cafeteria. But no. 'I'll take the library,' I said. "It'll be nice and quiet. I can get more studying done. And how the hell does one get a multidimensional portal into a Maytag crate in the first place? That's what I'd like to know?”
A/N: All the artifacts listed in this story, from the eye of armageddon to the spear of lona are artifacts in the DCU. I didn't make this stuff up folks!
