“I appreciate that you took the time to help me, Ben.” Chloe glanced at her step-son briefly as she turned off the paved road and onto the gravel driveway leading to the Kent farm.
“Not a problem, Mrs. W.”
Chloe sighed. It was bad enough that Dean agreed to train Lena Luthor-Ross-I'm-going-to-add-Winchester-to-my-name-next to be a hunter. But since Chance's fiancée had started training with Ben, she'd passed on the habit of calling Chloe Mrs. W. Like she was the main character in a sit-com or something.
But that was an argument to get into with Dean at another time. Today was about getting fresh eggs and tomatoes.
“Could you just call me Chloe?”
Ben shifted uncomfortably in the seat. “Okay . . . Chloe. I actually had a question to ask you.”
“Sure.”
“How many cousins named Kara do you guys have?”
Chloe grinned at that and shrugged. “It's a little confusing, but Clark and Lois didn't make it any easier.”
“Okay?”
“Well, there's Clark's cousin Kara who came from Krypton. She's Supergirl in her spare time.”
“Yeah.”
“And then there is Kara Zor-El, who is really the same person. Just from another dimension. And she's Power Girl.” Chloe gave him a sympathetic look. “Still with me?”
“Barely.”
“It gets worse. Because then when Clark and Lois spawned their own little heir of El, they named her Kara in honor of her cousins. She just took up the hero trade same as Chance. Only she calls herself Flamebird.”
“So that's it?”
“Yep. Although Power Girl asked us to call her Karen. And the other two are just Big Kara and Little Kara.”
“I think I follow,” Ben nodded slowly.
“Good.” Chloe put the loaner truck in park (her own car was, once again, wrecked) and got out just as Little Kara bounded down the steps.
“Hi Cousin Chloe!” The blonde waved enthusiastically.
Chloe heard a sharp intake of breath from across the roof of the vehicle. She turned in time to see Ben's startled, slightly lovestruck expression as he caught sight of Kara.
She blinked in surprise, and then smiled. Hook, line and sinker, just like his dad was. She shook her head. And that'll teach Clark to be so smug in thinking that his daughter was safe from Winchester men.
