I'm a bit confused, what exactly is an avatar?

Anytime you've ever seen a fanfiction where the author is speaking to a tiny person, Possibly one of the characters from the fanfic, who happens to be sitting on the computer screen, then you've probably seen an Avatar.

Most usually, the author is complaining that the Avatar isn't co-operating, or the story isn't going where she wants, or the avatar is giving her plot ideas for other stories when she's supposed to be writing something else.

Or quite possibly, the avatar may be whining that it's sick of what the author is writing, and would prefer if the writer work on something else.

And while the little avatar may *look* like a character from a story, they're likely to *act* completely different.

In some cases, this type of story can be well done. In Most others, it's just the author's attempt at whining.

As a general rule, I believe that you can get away with anything, just so long as it's well written.
