in which I express my love for Bajorans

Sep 13, 2008 22:00

I have now finished season 2 of DS9! It's pretty much the only recreational-type thing I've done in the past week or two, catching an episode here and there at the end of long workdays. I'm feeling largely brain dead this evening, so I make no claims to brilliant meta. But I did wish to make note of the fact that this show just keeps getting better ( Read more... )

Hee!

I fully expect to continue to like the Cardassians more and more. And I like the way they've brought the nuance out more slowly: so that first we see the pov of the Bajorans, who simply hate them and with good reason, and then slowly we start to gain more sympathy. Which doesn't mean that the Bajorans are wrong, but just that it's all so complicated and, if I can apply this word (not really having a better one), they're all so human.

I think what continues to delight me is partly that I never expected this kind of storyline and this kind of nuance with it from Star Trek. This isn't an easy story to tell or to sustain, and I just love it! I also think they do well to keep it as one thread, though a persistent one, among others, rather than having, say one season be all about Bajoran politics and then being done with that and moving on to something else. Good stuff!

It makes me very happy to see someone else enjoying this show. It is so much fun to watch someone else discover it.

The Cardassians are fantastic villains. The great thing about this show is that it does not do black and white. Most shows like to pretend that they're all about the shades of gray, but sometimes with DS9 you can't even tell who's on the lighter end of the spectrum and who's on the darker end.

Such good stuff.

(And yes, it's going to keep getting better. *g*)

It's funny, it seems like this show is suddenly all over my flist! Lots of us watching for the first time or rewatching. Yay!

I guess what continues to surprise me so much about all this is not that there are really viable shades of grey in the characters but that this is Trek and there are still such shades of grey. And I love that the Federation stands out as being almost a bit goody-goody and short-sighted in the face of the complexities of the Bajorans and the Cardassians.

Oh, the Cardassians are amazing. Have you met Damar yet? He's the one standing in the corner, drinking. Keep an eye on him! But, yes, Garak! (GARAK!!) And Dukhat. Oh, you're making me want to go back and watch this again, because the villains are as complex and nuanced as the good guys to the point that you can't help but like them even when you root against them.

And, yes, it will just keep getting better. So much better. :)

Hmm, no Damar yet, I don't think. So far Garak is the only Cardassian on the station, aside from Dukat's occasional visits. But I'll be on the lookout for him!

And yes, so much win here!!!

*bounces up and down* YAY THAT pellucid IS WATCHING DS9 AND LIKING IT!!! And I'm with ya: when an episode tends towards characters other than Kira, Odo or Sisko, I get a little fidgety - not that I don't LOVE THEM ALL, I JUST. DON'T LOVE THEM EQUALLY. ERRR.

THE DOMINION IS SO MUCH WIN. <3333

And I second the commentor above me that YOU HAVE MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN IT COMES TO THE CARDASSIAN DAMAR. (He shows up at as a throw down Cardassian first before he grows into a really spectacular character)
