I've now finished the miniseries and the first three episodes of BSG. This is going to be one of those slow burn, get under your skin kinds of shows, isn't it? I haven't been incredibly overawed while I'm watching, but then a few hours later, I'm still thinking about it. Hmmm. Initial superficial thoughts: I love that most of the characters are so ( Read more... )

Oh boy, just getting into BSG, eh? Such an incredible and complex show, and I'm excited for you. XD

Yeah, I'm not sure why it's taken me until now--except that when it first started airing I didn't have a very good way to see it (no cable, no high-speed internet), so I got behind, etc. But I'm certainly interested to see what all the fuss is about!

My mother can not stand it when they say Frak because they say it so often. She ends up just yelling at the screen telling them to use the actual word.

I watched a couple episodes when a friend recorded SG1/SGA for me and included them but I never got into the show. Maybe it is because I never saw the miniseries.

I think seeing things in order, getting the background and setup from the miniseries, is really important. I saw one episode (the third, as it turns out--I remembered it when I watched it again yesterday) early on, and I didn't even finish it. I was confused and it just wasn't compelling. But with all the pieces in order, it's much more compelling.

Same here. That was why I was so big on getting my SG-1 seasons so I could catch up. I think I have seen at least part of every episode, most of them fully. Battlestar I watched about 2 episodes and was kinda "Wha?" Maybe one day I'll rent the mini-series and see if I can enjoy it better after seeing that. I just thouhgt it was kind of depressing and I like drama but not always depressing drama like it appeared to be.

It's been a while since I read The Poisonwood Bible, but I remember the parts set in the past, the drawing out of the family dynamics as they played out through the family's culture shock over being in Africa, being a lot more interesting than the sisters' stories in the present. It was interesting, in theory, to see the adult women and how the events of the past had shaped their choices and their relationships, but somehow it never quite gelled, possibly because of the lack of subtlety in Kingsolver's agenda.

I'm still only about halfway through, so I can't really comment yet on how well it's gelling. I'm finding the sisters all quite compelling, but yes, Kingsolver could certainly stand to be more subtle.

Oh yeah, I guess there are probably more Farscape season 4 Jacob recaps up by now. Hmm. TWOP recaps, though, are things that I read when I'm bored and have nothing else to do; even the best of Jacob's recaps usually only have the sum of a couple of paragraphs that I really like, and the rest is just boring. They're not so much my thing. The exceptions are his recaps for "A Human Reaction" and "DNA Mad Scientist," both of which I love. But that's a tangential way of saying that Jacob recaps won't be one of the most compelling reasons for me to watch BSG.

But I am enjoying it, and I'm willing to let it get under my skin, if that's its way. And I am enjoying Boomer/Sharon so far--probably my favorite character (so far really only seeming like one character, but perhaps that will change once I get further along--I am only on ep. 3), along with Roslin. Good stuff.

I read The Poisonwood Bible several years ago. Although I'm not sure how much I liked it, it was compelling enough that when I got to the depressing part (this was only a couple years after my daughter died), I decided to finish the whole thing as fast as I could (to minimize depression time) rather than just stop reading it.

Welcome to BSG! There were a few eps, especially in season 2, where I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat, and saying (out loud) "Hurry up!" "Oh, no!" and similar. There are some blah eps too, but I hope you enjoy it!

I do believe everyone who says BSG is wonderful. And I'm sure it will win me in the end--but it's going to have to work for it. For some reason I'm a resistent viewer. But it's starting to get under my skin!
