I donated something for a silent auction that will benefit the Japanese branch of the Red Cross.. and my work is donating a bunch there as well

Yeah, that's probably a good option. As I understand it, issues have sometimes come up with certain branches of the Red Cross, but national branches /= the whole organization.

I've done donations through Unicef and World Vision on different crisis, and I also donate to those two monthly. I've never been anything but happy with both of them, so based on own experiences I'd definitely recommend those two. I've never heard anything bad on either, and as a monthly donator they send me loads of proof and updates on their projects and my sponsored child.

Aw, you have a sponsored child too? We just applied for one, that's awesome :) Where do they live?

There was some sort of Unicef issue here a while ago, but it was only the German branch and they've been investigated and apparently things are all right now. I like the children's organizations because I feel it's most important to help the kids. I think we'll go with World Vision for the Japan donation this time.

Peki, sorry but because this process was taking so long, I've already donated directly to the Japanese Red Cross. The link that I used is:

No problem. I should hope that everyone who participates in the auction donates whether they win or not. I chose World Vision this time.

If I had won the auction for your fic, I would have definitely gone ahead with the donations. I forgot to tell you that part, but you know that right? *hugs*

I sorry for not waiting, it's just that I really wanted to do something now. I know what I'm saying doesn't make sense, but that country is suffering so much, and I just wanted to help in any way I could, as fast as I could. Sorry again peki!

No, I know what you mean! Of course :) It's not a problem, the auction is only meant to be an incentive, but I'm sure all who participate are looking to donate no matter what. In that sense, the fandom auctions aren't even really necessary, per se, but I like feeling as if I'm doing something to contribute...even if it's just writing fic. But what counts is the donation, so :)
