Making it public

I keep saying that I need to do more reading related to my research, and I often succeed for a couple weeks and then get distracted. But no more! I've been reading up on goal setting, and am setting a concrete goal, tracking it, and making it public ( Read more... )

This is something I struggle perpetually with too. Way to go on the goal-setting, and good luck! It always seems like in order to actually "keep up with the literature" properly, I would spend all my time reading, so most of the time it seems so overwhelming that I don't manage to read anything.

What kind of resources and/or communities do you have in your field to help out with this? Regular journal clubs with colleagues? Good online archives of relevant journal articles? Or are you stuck with finding articles and puzzling over them all by your lonesome?

Unrelated: I happened across this over breakfast this morning and thought of you. Tim says it was a very surreal way to wake up! Theremin Killed the Radio Star

I don't yet feel like my goal is keeping up, more that I'm trying to get caught up in the specific area of my research. And so far it does mean that I'm spending a lot of time reading. 137 pages!

There's a weekly journal club with the other hearing folks around here, but I find it inconsistently useful. We cover one journal, which has some stuff I'm interested in and some that I'm not, and usually lag about 9 mo behind. For now I mostly troll the ISI Web of Knowledge citation database.

And yeah, I totally gotta get working on my theremin skills!
