The Secret Garden

I had an old tape recording of the soundtrack of the Broadway musical The Secret Garden (score by Lucy Simon, Carly Simon's sister). I love, love, love this show: the soundtrack is exquisite, and besides, of course, I love the story. It's one of my favorite musicals, too, for many of the same reasons. (Also, while still living out on the East Coast, got to see it on Broadway, which was a glorious production.)

It manages a particular kind of charmingness without being overly cheesy or presumptive, that I find really lovely, and keep coming back to.

I love The Secret Garden so much. Not just the musical, but the movie that came out in 1992 or 93--which also has a beautiful soundtrack.

Philip Quast has sung both male roles. He sang Archibald for the Shakespeare Company's 2001 production, with Christian Patterson as Neville. He and Anthony Warlow sang in the Australian production.

It is a gorgeous song. It is a shame that there don't seem to be many male duets in music theatre.

I remember seeing this when I was about 14/15 - I had a horrid stomach bug, but went anyway - it was amazing.
