IBM have been real smart. For one thing, they knew for sure which unit to get rid of while diversifying heavily into server computing and later on, in variations of that. They sold their PC/laptop units to Lenovo way way earlier when people were still debating about tablet/smartphone not capable of replacing pc/laptops etc. They did not wait for verdict or went by any popular opinion. I guess Google has taken those lessons from IBM about what units to shutdown though they do wait out way too longer while doing so.

It's something we as individuals need to learn as well. Quite so often I have seen people debating endlessly about how everything is old wine in new bottle; people talk just jargon etc. As an individual, you learnt something and used it successfully. You can love it, adore it and yet never get emotional about it. At some point of time, you have to move onto the next thing.
