Isla Vista Recycling Service

One thing really stunning about this place is its "recycling service." If you walk around Del Playa Dr. on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday morning, you'll see whole families (pretty much latinos) walking around collecting bottles from the street, so that they can be taken and redeemed for cash at the recycling center. They're all wearing clothes ( Read more... )

I mean it's not as if you can equalize everything, right, because then it would inevitably end up unfair due to the handicaps that equalization would put on some people. You cannot flatten a social class structure in a fair or functional way, can you? I do not expect that people should do my dirty work just because they are in a different economic situation, but that is just the way things are. Perhaps I am being the cat and saying it is fair for me to catch the mouse because I can, but I really think some things (such as capitalism in america) are a bit unshakable.

Yeah, I'm not complaining that there are social classes, I'm just complaining that people don't appreciate how easy it is for us college students who are living the life, always have been, and always will be to a certain extent...

ya, you're so deep :) here in the city, from one block to another you are faced with people of such diverse races, backgrounds, classes, whatnot... it's eye-opening and makes me feel fortunate. Sure I can't afford going to school here, and yeah, it's true that i'm paying to take class and working for no pay and yet still able to safely buy myself food daily...but it's weird because i see the poverty when i walk to class...

Yeah, it's amazing how many people love their little bubble and hate to leave it. I'm sure that's one of the most beautiful things about NYC, that it's too dense for hard core bubbles.

BTW, I've been meaning to ask you how hard it is to get an apt there. I might be looking at an internship at the UN next summer, and I was wondering whether or not a sublease wouldn't not be impossible to find.

ooooh, you'd love the city! It's not that hard to find apartments here, but it is hard to find a nice apartment in a nice area on a budget... I suggest that if you're only here for the summer, that you look into NYU summer housing. Sure, it means you have to sign people in and out, and all that shit that is not fun to deal with, but it makes it affordable, and for what you're paying for you get a nice ass place, in a top notch area ( ... )
