Would it be possible to get any kind of satellite dish installed, or does the historic nature of the property (and possibly cost?) preclude that?

I hear that satellite is not so reliable, especially if you're trying to Skype, but it is something to try if the cellphone signal doesn't co-operate.

Cool. It sounds similar (but probably on a larger scale) to a flat a friend used to rent. They had actually split the house up as well as the outbuildings. I went to a party there and one person lived in the library, another the drawing room etc. Their flat was, co-inidentally, the kitchen and probably stores. A big barrel vaulted room with tiny windows and interestingly shaped side rooms.

So yes, sounds perfect. I'm sure there's a way around the broadband. I assume no ADSL on the phone line then?

Exactly the same situation! They do have a connection, but it's about a hundred years old (well, maybe ten lol) so the best that Sky or BT can do is 1-3Mb at most.

Frustratingly, I'm told that the owner of big house got friendly with the people at Virgin Media a few years ago, and when they were in the area putting in fibreoptic broadband, they offered to put a line in up to the house as a favour. He said nah, don't need it. *sigh*

Frustrating. And short sighted!
We can't get cable and we're in the city centre! Our adsl gets about 7-10MB or so. But we used to be about 1-3 and it was manageable, just not for streaming.
Sigh, just googled where the friend used to stay and there's a flat for sale at the moment in the house that's remarkably affordable! I'd be tempted if circumstances were slightly different. Google Dalzell House for a nosy (it's much bigger than I remember and rather wonderfully gothic).

Wow! Okay, you win.

FYI, the time wasn't really right for me either, I was going to wait a bit longer so that the money was better. But when the opportunity arises, you have to grab it with both hands. :)
