I love your ideas but I'm afraid they wouldn't fly in a public school environment. You're so constricted by what the board wants you to teach (and political correctness) that despite all your well-meaning-ness it may not work out. :/ I bet at a private or charter school you could do this, though!

Well, it's true about how constricted you are -- it depends a lot on the school, the class, and the students, though -- in my 4th grade student teaching placement I taught guided reading lessons in a self-designed unit on poetry for social justice and led group discussions on topics like racism, which were actually really powerful... i think those were my proudest moments student teaching.

so, yes, it's hard to fit that stuff in to the state curriculum mandates and timeframes, but not impossible to make it fit!
