Yesterday I saw an interview with Miley Cyrus where she spoke complete nonsense. Absolutely nothing intelligent coming out of her mouth. Recently she has taken America by storm because of her overly sexual antics. For many, it's difficult to view her this way because she grew up on American television as a child star on the Disney Channel. Now she's on stage simulating sex and releasing videos like this one for her new song "Wrecking Ball." In a week, the video has over 118,000,000 views. Of course, the whole transition from innocent girl to seductress is a brilliant marketing scheme. No matter the nation, sex sells. But then I began thinking about my young cousins who adored her as the Disney character "Hannah Montana" only a few years ago. Now they see her swinging naked on a wrecking ball and licking a sledgehammer!! Sexy? Perhaps this is one of the most subjective words in the English dictionary.

The only pop star during my generation who pushed such boundaries was Madonna, but I don't believe her actions rose to this extreme scale. Personally, I don't care if adult female singers or actresses portray themselves in a sexual manner. What a woman does with her body is her choice. If she wants to sell it through prostitution or sexually suggestive marketing strategies more power to her. For instance, I fully support legalization of prostitution in all States. It should be regulated and taxed, etc.

However, I do believe there's real harm in young girls seeing people like this as role models. Parents can try to shield children from such scenes to a certain extent, but in the multi-media world in which we live kids will still be exposed to it at school, on the Internet, etc. What about famous Russian pop stars? I don't know any, but do the young singers behave in a similar fashion? And for those of you who have young daughters, do you worry about them being sexualized at a young age? In America, it's becoming a real sickness. Even clothing for very young girls is becoming more risque. Last year, mega retailer Abercrombie & Fitch released thongs in very small sizes. The average age of the target consumer was said to be 10 -11 years old. "Wink wink", "candy", etc. Is it okay for these sayings to be associated with a ten year old crotch?



All women should embrace their sexuality, but when girls as young as ten or eleven are doing it it causes me great concern. Further, all young girls should be taught self-esteem and worth at a young age, but such inherent feelings should not be solely tied to beauty and sexuality. Sex, being provocative, running around half naked. These actions should not be the only pathway to success and acceptance in mainstream culture.
