There are plenty of fat children in Russia and Ukraine also. I've seen them with my own eyes. :) These greasy sausages are no better than chicken nuggets.

It is easy to grow fat as we become older! :) I like soups, but not porridge or buckwheat!

It will be very interesting to see the lunch content of the kids at US schools!
Talking about Russian and Ukrainian school cafeteria menus - I think they changed a lot since the soviet period. But at some schools (not as many) it's the same unfortunately: fried cakes so-called "pirozhki", fruit drink "kompot", borsht or oily soup, and some traditional main dish.
You should visit once a typical Russian school. I'm sure it will be very interesting for you!

Yes, I would like to visit a Russian school but it's not so simple. :( Everything there is closed off, it's not always so easy to get access or photograph things (esp.as a foreigner). However, maybe I have some readers who are teachers, and they could help. I will consider it next time I visit. It would be good for school children to meet an American and speak with me.

I don`t know why, but once I was bombarded by LJ blogs montrealex May 26 2015, 20:26:32 UTC
wishing to be my friends where school food was described, promoted and so on, with numerous pictures and so forth. I never befriended them, but I think if you go by key words школьное питание you`ll find a whole lot of data on it.

We have a TV-show where speaker inspects public catering etc. She did the show with public Ukrainian schools. It's interesting and terrible in the same time.

My third grader always prefers a home lunch. She feels nauseous after eating school lunch. And if she ends up eating in school she would only eat a peanut butter sandwich.

I used to eat peanut butter sandwiches all the time! It was my favorite thing for school lunch. :) How do Europeans and Russians live without peanut butter? :)) I could not do it!

We can't understand how you are eating it) just everyone who I know don't like peanut butter. It is not typically for us. Usually we're eating soups and meat/fish/chicken with sudedish like as potatoes, rice, pasta or buckweat. We think that it's healthy. Russian schools have the same menu. And it's free.

Sure, I understand. Peanut butter is something unusual or exotic for Russians, but for Americans it's totally normal. Almost all children are eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches during their childhood. :) I eat peanut butter on a lot of things - celery, bread, crackers, and it's most delicious on red apples. :)) In the U.S., school lunches are not free. Children must pay for them, but the U.S. government subsidizes the cost for low income families.

The high school in the village (1-10 classes), available was school cafeteria.
To 4 classes inclusive lunches were free, later - cost small money. It was possible to choose what to order. School students (little girls) helped to prepare for the cook.
It was pleasant to me)).
Ah yes, it was - in the USSR))

But what did you eat? Porridge, buckwheat, sausages? Btw, I don't understand the difference between porridge and buckwheat? I don't like any of these "oats," not even the American version called oatmeal. Too mushy and bland! :))

Okay, these foods don't sound so horrible. :) I always like drinking compote during my Russian visits. You're right, I don't know how to cook porridge or buckwheat. These are not common dishes in the USA, but almost everywhere in the world people are eating a lot of potatoes. I think this vegetable should achieve a medal for being the most "global" food. :))
