For books, I recommend Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, if you have not read it. I also recommend anything and everything by Haruki Murakami, though he is definitely a pretty depressing author at times. (I also suggest reading through a few short stories before actually picking up a book. He is definitely, definitely not for everyone, and his short stories make a good litmus test.)
