I haven't been moved to post in a while, but I read this article today and just had to put in my two cents.

The article is titled Parents Rise Up Against A New Approach to Math and is about certain schools teaching kids how to do basic math in a different way than the traditional multiplication tables and flashcards ( Read more... )

It's a quick way to do math in your head.... BUT, i base it all on the multiplication tables I learned. Got to learn the ABC's...

I'm probably the only one that can do some logs in their head too.... ;)

One of my deeper regret is that I learnt how to add like everyone else. It's set in stone at the most basic level and is therefore the hardest to change.

For example. I wish I'd learned to do graphical multiplication and can do it without thinking: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/296904/easy_graphical_multiplication_trick/

However, since it's already hardwired to the traditional way. I have to learn how to unlearn it first. Very frustrating.
