This may be a knee-jerk reaction, but my immediate thought is: What about the sociopaths?Studies have shown that approximately 1 in 10 people is a functioning sociopath - that is, someone who demonstrates no antisocial behaviours overtly enough to trigger legal intervention but who at the same time has utterly no empathy whatsoever - they are completely selfish to the point where they don't recognise other people even as people. This condition is not correctable; debate continues over whether sociopaths are born or made, but the fact remains that sociopathy can be detected in early childhood, and educating a sociopathic person in empathy and others' feelings does not cure the base sociopathy but makes the sociopath better able to disguise it
