So after much deliberation I've decided to get back into
Warhammer 40,000, a futuristic tabletop war-game featuring armies of hand-painted miniatures.
I bought and painted an army of space marines (the guy in the picture at right) back in middle school and high school but for lack of opponents I had moth-balled the hobby after freshman year of HS. Well, it turns out that my dear friend Peter and his brother are in possession of an ungodly number of W40K miniatures and so we have played a few battles using my marines and any number of Nick and Peter's vast number of armies (I think between them they have six?). Well, suffice to say, it bugged me that some of my miniatures were unfinished and unpainted, so I've taken it upon myself to paint the remainder of my army and possibly purchase a few more units to add to it.
So last week I drove over to the local
Games Workshop and bought the necessary paint to restart my modeling hobby. Miraculously, of the 30 or so paint pots I had from middle school, a good 20 of them were still good despite being 10+ years old! In fact, I brought some in to ask the guy at the store about and he was blown away that I had 10-year-old paints that were still in perfect condition! Towards the very end of my earlier modeling career, GW introduced a new style of paint pot with a twist off lid (instead of popping off the top). Ironically, all of the twist off paint pots were completely dried out while my older paints were the ones that remained good. Just goes to show new is not always better!
Well after cleaning up my room a bit and reorganizing my dust-covered miniature supplies, I painted one practice guy last night and I have to say I am very pleased! I don't know how long the hobby will hold my interest again, but hopefully I will complete my space marine army and get in some fun exciting games with Peter and his bro.
