As far as I'm concerned, you could be wearing a custom $2,000 Italian suit but wearing athletic shoes entirely cancels out any classiness you may have had. I am willing to give women a little leeway here because most women's dress shoes are extremely uncomfortable. But men's dress shoes are usually very practical so there is no excuse ( Read more... )

I gotta disagree with you on this one....

I love sneakers, and would MUCH rather wear those than anything else I own.
I mean, a tux and some Vans aren't going to get the job done, but look at House for example- the man can pull off wearing sneakers to work, when he should be wearing dress shoes to work (then again he's also usually in jeans and a t-shirt, but still).

I'm more unforgiving of women wearing skirts and sneakers, likely because as a lady I just buy comfortable dress shoes to avoid the embarrassment.

It isn't always a cost issue. I have $500 custom orthodics for a foot problem and I buy top of the line athletic shoes to put them in because with anything less... I simply can't walk or stand for more than 30 minutes. The only shoes on the market costing less than $100 that allows me to stand or move for more than 30 minutes are Crocs. (Even those won't hold up to a trip to the mall or a long walk outside or a full work day.) So I would be the kind of woman you see walking around in a suit with Crocs or New Balance on my feet, not because I'm cheap, but because I simply can't walk without them.

I think the issue is more with women who spend the same amount on shoes (less than you, even), but which aren't conducive for wearing. You wear crocs/sneaks out of necessity; I think there's nothing wrong with that. :)

I'm not really a dressy person, though, and can get away with wearing sneakers to the lab/office.

Actually, I kinda find that attractive- someone who purposefully doesn't wear dress shoes, but goes with sneakers even in a fancier outfit.... I tend to view that person as more outgoing/less worried about what others think, which makes them more attractive in my mind.

All those Weddings where the bridal couple wears matching sneakers or something- I love those photos and that idea!

Well, considering the cost of dress shoes, did you consider that the person in question might be saving them for when they get to their destination? Even though (as I've stated) I can't walk in dress shoes, I still wear them for interviews or to formal events. But I wear sneakers or Crocs up until the last possible second. Tony does the same, not because he can't walk but because he'd rather put wear and tear on his $35 Crocs than his $120 dress shoes.

It's easy to change your shoes and a little more conspicuous to pop a $2000 Italian suit out of a bag and change in your car.
