Unlockable Content in Games: What do YOU think?

Unlockable content. It has been around in console fighting games for ages. You buy a brand new game and sit down to play and realize that the character screen is only half full or the half the levels are greyed out. it's a delicate balance and one that I've definitely thought about

I think it is a bit duplicitous to advertise a wealth of content, only to force players to unlock said content. Still, there should be some way to distinguish talented players who have invested in the game. If I could figure out the perfect balance between the two, I'd start my own gaming company.
