Tutorial °8: Sansa & Sandor

In this tutorial, some steps might be different to how I originally made this because I used the colour-variation tool, which can only be used to change a layer and not create a new one.

I knew I wanted to blend this with a picture or put text on it, so I did a without-forehead-crop. I also felt weird having her neckline in it too much so I made sure it was where I wanted to put the text later: now we can begin!

Step 1

->

To brighten the image, I added this texture and set it to ~screen.
Then I selected my base and the texture layer and merged them into a new third layer. I set that one to ~softlight to get some contrast in there.

Step 2

->

Let me introduce to you my best friend: colour balance!
I used it to make everything more yellow, red and bright.

Shadows: +15; -5; +5
Midtones: +20; -10; +10
Highlights: +5; +35; -35

Step 3

->

I obviously did not like the colours and changed them quite a lot using selective colour(absolute). I tried to make everything red blue-ish and darker:

Greys: +30; -15; -20; +15

Step 4

->

Next, I merged all layers into a new one and used selective colour(still absolute) again.
This is what I did:

Reds: +20; 0; 0; -10
Yellows: +15; -10; 0; -50

After that, add a curves layer and do a curve like this, so make a deeper contrast.

Step 5

->

Even though I really like the colours in it rn -and I really don't know what I did- but I added a colour fill layer (# ffe5c4 ████) and set it to ~multiply.

And after that I made the whole thing red again (whyyyy?). Selective colour:
Reds: +20; 0; +20; +5

Step 6

->

Then I created a new layer and drew in a brownish-dark-red on the lower half of the icon, focused on the left side. I set the layer to ~softlight and the fill to 50%.

Step 7

->

Next step is vibrancy:
Vibrancy: +55
the other: 0

I also randomly put this texture by innocent_lexys on it. The mode is ~pin lights; fill: 40%.

Step 8

->

Next, brightness/contrast:
Brightness: 65
Contrast: 33

Step 9

->

Then I merged all layers into a new one and used variations (Image> Adjustments> Variations) and did something like this, I think: (in this order)

Midtones: Yellow
Shadows: Green, Darker, Green, Yellow
Highlights: Yellow, Brighter
Midtones: Blue

It's not exact, but it really is something you do randomly until you like the result :)

That done, I used another selective colour layer:

Yellows: -10; +10; +15; +5
Greens: +100; +100; -100; +50
Greys: +10; 0; 0; 0

Great! So, we're done with Sansa. Now let's add Sandor to it :)

Step 10

->

I chose a cap of him shortly after he saved her (because Sansa's cap is just seconds before that horrible scene down in the alley).
I did some editing, but sadly I don't know what anymore. Obviously I used gradient overlay in red/orange/pinkish-colours. I don't even know. I also drew over a part I didn't like (right side).

I set the cap on ~linear dodge. I also added a layer mask to it and with a large soft brush I drew over the left edge a tiny bit to make it look like it's fading.

Step 11

->
->

Last step is the text on it. It says "the most exotic flower" which is from a song by Lana del Rey.
I chose a font called Jellyka Western Princess, the colour is a dark orange.
Then I dublicated the text layer, moved it up and left a pixle and changed the colour to yellow

After that I only merged it all and sharpened it, like always ;)
