This is the first part of the tutorial requests I got over at Ask the Maker 2.0
I hope you like them. There will be a few more soon, so watch out ;)
Tutorial 1:
For this icon I started using
this cap of Brian Kinney + plus unknown company at Babylon. It has some great colours and contrast, which makes it quiet easy to work with it.
Before I started cropping I dublicated the layer, so I could try out different crops and positions, and compare them.
I started with the sexy back of this man, which, to me made a great base.
I added a level adjustment layer to lighten up the base:
OUTPUT LEVELS: 25 | 255
Since the icon isn't about sexy backs, but sexy Brian Kinneys, I resized the dublicated layer and set it to screen.
After the blending, I added
this texture (taken from the picture itself) and set it to screen.
Now, let's do the colouring! To get some more greens&reds, I added a Colourbalance layer with these settings:
SHADOWS: +6 | -19 | -9
MIDTONES: -1 | -22 | -87
HIGHLIGHTS: +9 | -9 | +6
Now, add a Selective Colour layer with these settings to add contrast and make the colours stand out a bit more:
GREYS: +5 | +4 | +12 | +6
And to add even mooore contrast: LEVELS again:(This time the upper numbers, idek how to describe what I mean lol)
6 | 0,79 | 232
That's the result of all the adjusting :D
Not much of a difference, but I wanted the red space above Brians head to stand out even more, so I created a new layer (SHIFT+Command+N) and coloured over it with a red/pinkish colour (#ad374b) set it to Overlay (Opacity: 72%; Fill: 83%)
TEXTURES! I used this
brilliant texture (@lostandtaken), resized and dublicated it 3 times(!) Two of the 3 layers I moved to the left and right side so they formed a border and set them to soft light(Fill: 26%).
I resized the last one so that it fit perfectly between the other two parts and set it to screen (Fill: 26%).
I wrote "Pleasure" myself (Colour #b44e3c; Overlay) added a drop shadow and a gradient (red/brownish; linear dodge). I merged it into one layer (the textlayer + new empty layer -> select both -> Command+E). I set the new layer to colour dodge, et voilà!
I don't remember the font I used for the "maximum of" but it's something Geogia-ish (colour #c1997e; Hard Light)
Now, MORE TEXTURING, YAY (I can't live without them :D)
This beauty (by lookslikerain@LJ) -> softlight (Fill: 41%)
And this one -> resize, place on the lower half of the icon -> Colour Dodge
The last two steps were colouring again.
Colourbalance:
SHADOWS: +5 | +2 | -2
MIDTONES: +6 | +8 | -15
HIGHLIGHTS: -5 | -8 | -15
Levels: 11 | 1,14 | 255
DONE :DDD
Tutorial 2:
For this icon I used
this cap of Aidan Gillen from the film "Blitz".
First, I wasn't sure about how good or bad, how easy or difficult this would be, but it turned out to be very easy to edit. (Contrasts and shit ;DD)
I know it's much text but really, it's easy to make! :)
This is what I started with :) /LOL ZOMBIE SKIN
I don't know why, but I made it paler and even more boring looking by adding a PHOTOFILTER: Cooling Filter (LBB)
OKAY SO THE NEXT STEPS GONNA BE NUMBER HEAVY!! I tried to get colours more visible, so I had to do this..(I never know what I am doing, I just try stuff XD) Add Selective Colour:
REDS: -100 | +18 | +80 | +56
YELLOWS: -100 | -43 | +33 | -31
GREENS: +80 | +38 | +100 | -19
CYAN: +100 | +100 | -100 | +53
BLUES: +10 | 0 | 0 | 0
GREYS: -17 | 0 | +3 | +15
Add Colour Balance:
SHADOWS: 0 | +16 | +15
MIDTONES: -5 | -1 | -10
HIGHLIGHTS: +23 | -9 | +5
And now
add this texture -> Screen (Opacity: 56%; Fill: 22%) +
layermask(I don't know who made it, so if you do, please let me know)
I did this to lighten up the left side of the icon.
NOW LET THERE BE COLOUUURS! New layer + Soft/Smooth Brush -> Painted the left side with #5dbea4 and the right side with #2e9277. I set it to Hard Light.
To contrast and add colour to his skin I chose this
wibbly wobbly texture (by unknown) & set it to Overlay (Fill: 56%)
To brighten up the left half of his face and neck I simply painted it over with white. (Overlay; Fill: 24%)
After that, I selected and dublicated all layers and merged them to one. I don't remember how I changed the contrasts but I think I used the Dodge and Burn tool.
Next I added
thiiiis texture(@lostandtaken) -> Soft Light (Fill: 38%)
Another
texture (@lostandtaken) to brighten up the whole icon -> Overlay (Fill: 74%) +
layermaskkkk Copy and merge it all again!
I used the Smudge tool to get rid of the white space on the left:
Very last step: Merging, sharpening + layermaksing where it's soo sharp ;)
/sorry for all the grammar fails and all the tense switching xD
I hope this was helpful and if you have more quesions and requests, feel free to ask here in my thread ♥_♥
