After once fighting with a bad combination of available USB ports and speed issues, my tool kit now contains not only the USB2 to PATA/SATA converter (includes a power supply!) but also a PATA drive to SATA interface converter. (Also: assorted cables and the happy 2.5"-3.5" IDE adapter boards.) Time-limited/emergency upgrades just can't be left to USB. FireWire's great if you've got it, but too many PCs still don't. I also recommend a spare optical drive. The only thing I can't do from my iBook is create a bootable USB flash drive, but if I can boot an Intel box from an optical disk, I'm covered there.

When I finish it, I have to write up the adventure of updating my DVR box. We have still not solved the problem of boot loaders (LILO or grub, no difference) having different views, pre- and post-boot, of which interface is the "first" one.
