Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)

Jan 31, 2009 00:22

So tonight, David Letterman is putting right a wrong done 15 years ago. In October 1993, comedian Bill Hicks taped a performance on Letterman's newly minted Late Show on CBS. Letterman's show was brand new, and the network a bit more conservative than his previous home at NBC ( Read more... )

We just rewatched the Pink Panther movie on Friday night. I liked it. It was silly and funny and utterly ridiculous. My kind of diversion.

Hey, to each their own. Just not my cuppa is all.

Then again, I may also be attached to the Peter Sellers versions of my childhood.

People tend to imprint on the first version of something they see/experience, like their first Bond, their favourite Volkswagon Beetle, or Coke vs. Pepsi. We are creatures of habit.

So true!

This reminds me of going to the Towers Mall in Stratford in 1977/78 and taking the Pepsi Challenge, and being very upset that I kept picking Coke.

This made it awkward 15 years later, when I went to work for Pepsi for a couple of years.

I... don't actually see Leary and Hicks as being the same act. Similar, yes, but not really the same.

Then again, I also can't see Bill Hicks doing voices for Disney movies, and especially not for freaking Operation Dumbo Drop.

The thing is, I like Dennis Leary. But he's no Bill Hicks. Leary is just an asshole to other people: Bill Hicks had actual important shit to say about our society. Leary says "fuck you, I'm an asshole," Bill Hicks said "Fuck you, because you're perpetuating a society in which something like Billy Ray Cyrus can be a big star."

Also, I have to give Dennis credit for his work on Rescue Me and other stuff, and like you say, I can't get angry at the man for making a living - who knows how much money they offered him for his voice on these various animated movies, and he has kids, and blah blah.

Steve Martin... ought to know better. But that ship has loooong since sailed.

I have a friend to whom being compared to a "post-kids Leary" is the supreme insult. I agree with you on the differences between Leary and Hicks. Hicks had a lot more subtlety, and, I think, hope for a better world. There are several bits on No Cure For Cancer that definitely have their roots in Hicks material ( ... )
