It's getting to be Christmas-time; as a result, Grandma is home; as a result, my belly is full of delicious gnocchi. I call your attention to the interesting etymology of "gnocchi" (see link), and also that it is a very funkily spelt word: note the initial "gn-", which is always a thrill, paired with the rare "cch" in the middle. Okay, that was way too intentionally oblique. Clarification: yes, that 'joke' did not deserve the title, and, no, "tragic" seems quite excessive a adjective for a characteristic that is, truthfully, not bad.

twat. And, yeah.

Also, re: hal's writing style - I had a similar multiple-read reaction, although not to the sentence you cited (which I particularly like) and not to his use of 'twenty dollar words'. Had a slight sense of editorial satisfaction when, upon second read, I found a few places where the prose got excessive/edits could be made. Nevertheless, I certainly think that he is one of, if not the, best writer I know personally.
