i say that mainly b/c i don't remember buffy having many attractiveness crises - but i should also say, i never cease to be absolutely shocked by the amount of self image anxiety conventionally beautiful people have. i agree with you about it making her delusional, but you may be underestimating the amount to which that delusionalness is a common part of the teen girl experience in our society, even among girls who look like movie stars... and superheroes?

Maybe my frustration with Buffy stems from my frustration with that kind of delusion in general. If somebody I think is attractive complains about how they look, I have to struggle with the fact that the most honest, relevant, and probably helpful thing I have to say on the matter, like "actually, I am suppressing the desire to bang you right now. I don't think you have anything to worry about," is ( ... )
