Yeah, I've been trying to wrap my head around this. I think it's a paradox Bataille recognizes, although in a slightly different form. For example, he writes that one of the things that, say, really ostentatious gift-giving is supposed to do, in addition to causing intimacy, is to acquire the socially recognized power to give, which gives you a kind of social rank. But the pursuit of rank undermines the entire enterprise by making it all just a matter of "servile [rational, unwasteful] use" again.
