I see from the news that there was quite a storm over the weekend, especially in the south of England.  I was indoors most of that time in Manchester.  I was worried that my house might be damaged but when I got home on Tuesday, all seemed to be OK ( Read more... )

I think Tim probably has this right. You might want to check if anyone nearby has gas central heating or something else that might need a vent of this size, and now has a large hole in their roof. Probably a flat roof, I don't think it would work on a roof that sloped.

Indeed, neither my house nor the other houses in my cul-de-sac have chimneys. No flat roofed houses that I can see, but it could be from an extension.

Assuming the wind was from the west during the storm, it could be from over the street. In which case, it was great luck it didn't smash into the greenhouse. It was sitting right next to it on Tuesday.

Roof vent rather than chimney cover, I think, but certainly something in that line.
