What are the financial constraints? All of the "nutrition in bar form" options I know of are vegetarian (some might be vegan), but they're expensive.

If you're assuming (minimal) cooking facilities, then oats, lentils, and brown rice all become available. Rice + beans = complete protein, albeit probably unexciting. Instant oatmeal comes in individual packets (just add hot water).

Oh, I've seen shelf-stable (until opened) soy milk in the grocery stores, though I personally buy the refrigerated stuff so I don't speak to its quality.

I'm working on that, too -- the financial part. It looks like I'm going to end up with 4 versions of the shopping-list calculator: Vegetarian, Restricted Income, Moderate Income, Unlimited Income.

A couple of you have written privately about the freeze-dried meals at camping stores. They are very expensive, altho light. I can see them for evacuation resouces (assume you're in your car for 3 days, for example, as FEMA suggests), but not a family stockpile ( ... )

I've thought of that... patsmor June 15 2006, 01:32:10 UTC
Since I live in the middle of a Largely Mormon Community, I've asked several folks if they have such a publication, and can I get one. Lots of "sure!" but no doc yet. I'm going to google for it.

Then I'll have to see about adapting it to not having a full kitchen available....
