My mom and my sister read my LJ, but they don't have LJ accounts. So when I want to complain about them, I keep my entries locked. If they ever get accounts, I'll have to figure out filters.
That's sort of my situation; lots of my friends "outside" LJ read my stuff, so I lock things that I don't care to discuss with them.
However, what prompted this was Duncan leaving his MySpace journal homepage open before he went to his dad's on Friday; I debated reading it, then shut it down, because he needs some private space. In my opinion. I'm probably hypersensitive, since my mom not only read my diaries but opened all my mail (until I was a senior in HS and confronted her about it...).
I think you did the right thing. I think it would be fine to tell him that you'd closed the window for him, without reading it, and tell him you'd be happy to read his journals if he wanted you to read them but it was up to him, etc. Which I expect you've already done. But in general, I think it's up to the children to make that decision once they're nearly adults, like Duncan.
