I ended up buying D&D4e on Saturday. Then went back Sunday to buy the Open Grave sourcebook, which contains the coolest monster ever. Unfortunately, I can't reveal it because all my players read my blog, and it's going to show up in a dungeon soon ( Read more... )

Cool, thanks for the suggestions. I'm looking at dungeons of 3-5 encounters, hopefully playable in 1-2 sessions, mixed with more extended adventures taking a full level of 8-10 encounters. Definitely agree on the time pressure, I've had adventures go awry because I set up some hook that was more compelling than I expected, and then the PCs ignore all the side treks & stuff on the way because, hey, we've got to save the princess, no time to fool around.

We'll probably have a creation session with maybe a quick encounter to try out combat, followed by a short 'test run' adventure so we can all get used to the rules, plus have a chance to optimize or even switch out PCs if things aren't working out for a particular character.
