Any information you have can be useful in addition to his full name--birthday, hometown at the time he entered the service, branch of the service, unit (for instance 82nd Airborn). Another tactic is to search his hometown newspaper. If he did not live in a big city, local paper's often carried reports of service postings, notes if killed, wounded in action, missing, or captured, transfers to state side basis and notes about coming home. Most newspapers are on microfilm at local libraries, and if the newspaper still exists may also have an archive on line. There is usually a small charge for retrieving items that old from archives.
