All amazing observations. I haven't been able to get this out of my head since Thursday. (Gotta sit and scribble what's in my head that we didn't see on screen )
My noggin thunk a lot about that first crossroads offer and what I've decided is not all demons work as a unit. Kinda like different parts of the armed forces (navy, army, marines) all doing different things. Maybe, until Lillith officially grabbed a big chunk of power, she wasn't large and in charge like she seems to be now.
I also think that maybe John KNEW about the first seal business. He was such a prick about keeping things to himself, we can't be sure what he knew and when. If he knew, then that could have given him the motivation he needed to hold out. If Dean had known, I doubt he would have broken -- since he figured he was damned for good, maybe he eventually gave in to his what the hell attitude after 30 years of pain. Works for me. I think you're right about the demons not always being on the same page, but I'm not sure about John knowing the seal clause. How could he, in good conscience, have ever made the deal knowing what kind of opportunity he'd be giving the demons?
I don't want to see Dean take control of Sam, I just want to see him take control of his own situation. Figure out what he believes and act on it.
And I bet if I climbed into that hospital bed with him, I could get his old self right back in line. One good dose of Suz physical therapy and he'd be swingin' (dang...that was cheap and slutty) in the saddle once again.
I think Alastair's host was long dead already. The lightning bolt should have fried him plenty, if he wasn't dead even before that.
I'm hoping Dean's at bottom, too. He's given up for now, but he's not out for the count. Dean was still ready to fight on *after* Alastair told him about the seal. He was devastated, but he manned up, put on his game face, and turned to face the enemy, but Alastair was free.
Dean will find the inner strength to do the heroic thing. That's what Dean does. I just hope the motivation isn't something equally devastating that Sam does that forces Dean's hand.
I'm so scared for these boys. I can hardly take it.
You're probably right that the host was dead and gone. But his family won't know that. His corpse was still horribly mutilated. It just... it just bothers me.
Dean is the poster boy for falling down but never staying down. It's like the show has spent the last three and a half seasons trying to see what it would take to make him give up, and each time he's staggered upright again. I'm thinking once the swelling recedes after this latest beat-down, Dean will find it in himself to do it one more time.
I was just pissed 'cause, um, I'm a little too invested in a certain fictional character whom Kripke seems intent on whumping into a little pile of despairing snot.
Dean's eyes darkening is a nice touch, agreed. I felt that the bit where he was getting ready and exchanging sallies with Alistair? Jensen looked like he did in season 1 Dark Angel where he played the psychotic Manticore product.
Did Sam tell Ruby Dean's darkest, most soul-crushing secret?
Interesting thought to ponder. Or could it be because Ruby had an infoline to hell; which then makes her choice for backing and cultivating Sam something more ominous, no?

That has implications that are just as chilling as the other possibility. Huh. Cool.

Like much of fandom, I love it when Jared gets to play darker material. Evil!Sam is kinda hot, but Jensen's psycho characters (such as shifter!Dean and transgenic!Ben) make me deeply uncomfortable. Dean with a syringe and a cold smile was not the least bit sexy to me; I was cringing and watching from behind a pillow.
He can really amp up the menace, can't he? It is more subtle but it escalates; kinda like the cello/violin piece in The Psycho shower scene, no? Jensen's brand of dark side is not sexual, but a glimpse of the monster that lurks in the deep shadows in the corner, that you know will get you, no matter how hard you try to get away. Very chilling sort of evil.
