Her lifeless body weighs heavily on Jacob's shoulders, but not on his heart (never his heart, because he's never guilty). He carries her across the island simply because no one else will.

He lays her down carefully and wishes he had something to say, some fond memory of her smile, or the way her singing carried through the breeze, but the only voice he remembers is Esau's ("You did this, Jacob. You did.").

Jacob feels a twinge in his stomach as he brushes a dark lock of hair from her face. There is something he's supposed to say, foreign words that taste strange on his lips.

"I'm sorry."
