http://www.savenetradio.org/ As y'all know, I (until recently) worked at a radio station as a dj for about 2 years. The radio reception for KCPR was spotty for me, so I relied on the webcast more often than not. I still listen to it now, since because I movied, I'm WAY out of range for it. Recently there was a law change that TRIPLES the cost of lisencing for internet radio broadcasting. The best part? This fee increase is retroactive, back to THE BEGINNING OF 2006. Other fees are now calculated based on the number of listeners, meaning that they could increase without limit when people are actually listening. This is a handicap that internet radio broadcst can't survive. KCPR certainly can't, as a station with hardly any money to spend on crucial new equipment or even paying staff (all KCPR emmployees were volunteers).
It seems to me the law change is reacting to the wishes of sattelite radio companies, and is needlessly stepping on the throats of underfunded, talented, and legal internet broadcasts. It will seriously hamper not just college stations, but all non-profit or public radio.
The law change goes into effect on May 15, which will be KCPR's final internet broadcast. The website at the top of the entry has an automatic e-mail forwarder in it if you want to use their form letter. As soon as I get my druthers, I'll be composing a non-form letter to any congresspeople I can get contact info for (which should be all of them). I don't think it will make a difference, but it's worth a try.
